1 octanol polar or nonpolar

On the polarity of 1-octanol or not
The nature of the substance is related to polarity. What is the nature of 1-octanol? Research shows that 1-octanol has a hydroxyl group, but the long chain of hydrocarbon groups cannot be ignored.

Hydroxy groups, oxygen and hydrogen bond, oxygen has strong electronegativity, causing the electron cloud to be biased towards oxygen, so that the hydroxyl groups are polar. Looking at the whole, the long chain hydrocarbon groups are composed of hydrocarbons, which are similar in electronegativity, and the electron cloud is relatively uniform, showing the sign of non-polarity.

According to common sense, although 1-octanol contains polar hydroxyl groups, the long chain of hydrocarbon groups accounts for a large proportion, and its non-polar effect is more significant. Therefore, in general, 1-octanol is biased towards non-polar substances. Among many solvents, it is more soluble in non-polar or weakly polar solvents, which also proves its non-polar characteristics.

From this perspective, considering whether 1-octanol is polar or not, when considering the various parts of its structure, the conclusion is that it is biased towards non-polar.
